Seasoning & Care Instructions

How to Season Your Cast Iron

A well-seasoned skillet is the foundation of exceptional cast iron cooking. Follow these steps to build and maintain a durable, naturally non-stick surface.

  1. Preheat your oven to 450–500°F (230–260°C).
  2. Wash and dry thoroughly. If new, rinse with warm water and dry completely — no moisture should remain.
  3. Apply a thin coat of grapeseed oil to the entire surface — cooking surface, exterior, and handle. Our Pure Grapeseed Oil Seasoning Spray makes this step effortless and precise.
  4. Wipe away any excess using a blue shop towel. Only a very thin, nearly invisible layer should remain — shop towels are lint-free and ideal for this step. Too much oil will result in a sticky finish.
  5. Bake upside down for 1 hour. Place a sheet of foil on the rack below to catch drips.
  6. Cool in the oven before removing.
  7. Repeat 2–3 times to build a strong initial seasoning.

Why grapeseed oil? With a high smoke point and neutral flavor, grapeseed oil polymerizes beautifully into cast iron, creating a hard, slick seasoning layer that improves with every use.

Everyday Cleaning

Proper cleaning after each use preserves your seasoning and extends the life of your cookware.

  • Clean while still warm using our Bamboo Scrubber — firm natural bristles lift residue without stripping seasoning.
  • For stuck-on food, use our Bamboo Pan Scraper to gently dislodge debris before scrubbing.
  • Rinse with hot water. Avoid prolonged soaking.
  • Dry immediately and completely — moisture is cast iron's only enemy.
  • While still warm, apply a very light coat of grapeseed oil and wipe clean with a blue shop towel before storing — lint-free and streak-free every time.
  • Avoid harsh dish soaps or the dishwasher, which can break down your seasoning over time.

Removing Rust

Surface rust is not the end — it's a fixable setback. Scrub the affected area with your Bamboo Scrubber or a small amount of coarse salt as an abrasive, rinse, dry completely, and re-season following the steps above. Your skillet will be restored to its former glory.

Cooking Tips

  • Preheat gradually over medium heat before cooking — cast iron rewards patience.
  • Wooden, silicone, and metal utensils are all safe to use.
  • Cast iron retains heat exceptionally well; lower heat settings are often all you need.
  • Acidic foods (tomatoes, citrus, vinegar) can affect seasoning if cooked for extended periods — best to avoid until your seasoning is well established.

Storage

Store in a dry location. If stacking multiple pieces, place a folded blue shop towel or paper towel between them to protect the seasoning and allow airflow.
